Within
our Industrial Services
one of the services we offer is the provision of Forklift Truck
Drivers. The role involves
the Driver to transport heavy goods around depots such as factories and
warehouses. They
drive the forklift to shift and stack bales, cartons, containers,
crates ad pallets of goods in areas such as timber yards and
warehouses. They also move
shipping containers on the waterfront.
Any organisation that
has to deal with stock movement most certainly will require
the services of a Forklift Truck Driver.
The
typical duties include:-

Ø
Loading
and unloading goods from vehicles such as lorries and aircraft
Ø
Make
sure loads are evenly and securely placed
Ø
Arranging the goods in the warehouse on storage racks
Ø
Lift,
stack and unstuck articles and materials using diesel, electric, gas or
petrol powered trucks equipped with fork attachments
Ø
Moving
goods to processing or despatch areas of factories
Ø
Checking
goods are stored in the correct area of the warehouse so they can be
located easily when orders are being made up
Ø
Checking
loads to ensure it is secure before attempting to lift
Ø
Performing daily maintenance checks of the truck
Ø
Helping
to load and unload trucks manually
Ø
perform
other warehouse duties such as packing
Ø
keep a
record of daily operations

Forklift Truck Drivers may work indoors and outdoors in all
weathers and may have some contact with the public.
To work as a Forklift Truck Driver
the person will need to have:
Ø
a responsible and mature
attitude
Ø
be able to work quickly
and safely especially during busy periods
Ø
have good physical
co-ordination to operate a truck
Ø
be able to assess weights
and judge distances
Ø
be able to follow written
instructions and keep records
Ø
enjoy practical and manual
activities
Ø
good with hands
Ø
judge distances
Ø
safety awareness
Ø
good eyesight and hearing
Ø
meet appropriate age
limits
Training
for this role can be achieved through an Accredited Training Provider
at a Training Centre or at the employers premises, and it usually lasts
between 3-5 days. The training combines theory with practical exercises
and leads to a standard test approved by the Health and Safety
Commission. The three
elements in the test include theoretical test, pre-use check of the
lift truck, and a practical test.
A newly trained person would work under Supervision until
fully competent. Refresher
training and reassessment from time to time is undertaken to ensure the
forklift trucks are operated safely
